Styrbjoern, Hauge's father. From Viking Blood 1, The Assault by Marianne Slot
“Run, Hauge! Run!” Suddenly, all Hauge hears is his father’s voice, it drowns out the screams, the clashing of swords, and the roar of the fires from the torched houses. Haakon Gilmarsson and his men have attacked the village.

Goods to trade. From Viking Blood 1, The Assault by Marianne Slot
Hauge found it exciting to walk around and look at the different booths. Most of the things he knew well, such as leather goods, wooden utensils, pottery, and soapstone kettles. However, the merchants had also brought many new and unusual things from faraway lands: coloured glass in many shapes and unusual crafted silver and gold jewellery.

The Christian monks. From Viking Blood 1, The Assault by Marianne Slot
This year two odd-looking visitors had arrived too. They were wearing strange long, brown robes and came on foot, each with a long walking stick and a carpetbag. The eldest, Peter, told them that his God had sent him as an emissary. It was a strange God, unknown to Hauge, who generally thought he knew all the Gods. But then, this God seemed to be a bit peculiar, and very different from the Gods he knew about.

Hauge at his dead father. From Viking Blood 1, The Assault by Marianne Slot
“Why didn’t you fight better? Why didn’t you kill Haakon?” His voice grows louder, until it fills the room. “You should have buried your sword in his chest, right up to the hilt! Yes! THAT’S WHAT YOU SHOULD HAVE DONE!” He slams his fist down on the bench next to the body.
Hauge lowers his voice again, leans over Styrbjorn, and whispers, “He will die, Father, I promise you. He will die. He, and all his men, I will kill them; all of them!”

Dangerous landings. From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
“Tighten that up! Pull, damn you! Get that ship ashore! PULL!” The ship creaks and screeches, then suddenly, with a loud squeak, it tears free from the reefs. Now they are all pulling as hard as they can. The barrels keep the ship afloat, and after a short time of heaving, a great wave throws it the rest of the way onto the beach. “Careful now! Watch the bow!” someone yells. Too late! As the ship keels over the long prow breaks off with an ear-splitting crack.

Lauge Longsight and his sword. From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
As they reach the end of their climb towards Lauge’s lookout, they suddenly hear the clanging sound of metal against stone. “What is that?” Ingrid asks, scared. “Don't worry!” someone shouts from above. “It’s just me!” Lauge yells. He is looking down at them, holding a large, heavy sword in his hand.

Fighting. From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
Teasing, but irritated, Hauge approaches his friend, hand raised, as if he too has a sword. Ingrid and Bjarke look on, gaping, as the two friends present a lethal performance: a battle of life and death, one with a real sword in hand, the other with an invisible, but equally lethal and dangerous weapon.

Sven is furious! From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
“You will NOT come here and tell US what we can and cannot do! This is MY village and OUR GODS!” He grabs hold of Peter’s robe, pulling him close to his face. “GET OUT OF HERE! Both of you! RIGHT NOW! If I catch you around here again, I WILL KILL YOU! Do you hear me, you maggot?”

The Attack. From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
Just as they have mounted the horses, ready to leave the camp, they appear in the thicket: a band of armed, wild men, roaring ferociously as they tear into the camp, thundering towards them on sweating horses. They are led by a huge, red-haired warrior, swinging his sword over his head; roaringly rousing his men.

Haakon and Peter. From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
“Well, that Haakon, he was just laughing. Then Peter yelled: “You promised me to do it if I told you of Sven’s plans!” And then, well – then Haakon cut his head off! Just like that, in one clean swipe, laughing while he did it, too! Then they rode out of the village – to attack you.”

From Viking Blood 2, Secrets by Marianne Slot
Hauge pours some mead, talking to their leader. He is a big, powerful man with an impressive beard. He laughs loudly at Sigurd’s song, and smiles slightly at Hauge, especially, when Hauge shows him something precious. And no one notices as a very large nugget of golden amber change hands.

The bone carver. From Viking Blood 3, Revenge by Marianne Slot
Then Hauge notices some big walrus tusks on a shelf. “They for sure are splendid,” he says, impressed. “Yes, that they are,” the bone-carver says. “But those are hard to come by.” He scrutinizes Hauge. “Do you know what you’d have to do, if you want to make a good living?” Hauge doesn’t. “A strong, young man like you should go to Iceland, and bring some of those back here!” “To Iceland?” “Yes, up there you can buy them pretty cheap. Especially if you bring iron, and grain! And timber! Tusks like those can be sold at great prices everywhere. You can get a very good price for them in Jorvik, in England. But it’s even better to sell them in Haithabu. That’s where people from the southern countries come to trade. They’ll pay nearly anything for ivory.” He looks at Hauge expectantly. Then he adds, smiling: “but then, you could also just come by here, and sell them to me!”

Hauge and one of the attackers. From Viking Blood 3, Revenge by Marianne Slot
“Who are you?” he screams, furiously. “And where are our goods?” The man is so scared he can’t say a word. Hauge scratches his neck with the sword, while he yells: “Start talking, you filthy scum! Do you want to follow them?” he points with his other hand to the dead attackers. “N-n-no!” the man whispers, shaking. “W-we were s-split in t-two t-teams,” he stutters. “Oooooh, I see,” Hauge mocks. “So someone was supposed to steal our goods? While the others should kill us?” “Noo, th-that’s not – that’s not… We didn’t m-mean to k-kill!”

Hauge and his mother, Aasa. From Viking Blood 3, Revenge by Marianne Slot
She picks up something wrapped in a piece of cloth. “I had the smith make this; especially for you!” Hauge unfolds the cloth. It’s a big, heavy sword with a very beautiful handle, intricately engraved with powerful, twirled patterns. “Look at the blade!” Aasa says, and in the light from the fire Hauge spots the runes! “What do they mean?” he asks quietly. “Aasa gave this sword to Hauge for luck in battle.”

Coming home. From Viking Blood 3, Revenge by Marianne Slot
As they approach Hauge’s village, they can see people gather at the beach to receive them. They pull the ships out of the water, and are almost run over by the many people who welcome them back, safe and victorious.

The Sun Dial. From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
“It’s a beautiful night!” Hannibal has joined Hauge at the helm. “What do you steer by?” Hauge points to the sky; at the stars in their patterns and pictures. “Do you see the Big Dipper?” Hannibal nods. He knows that constellation. “There, in extension of it, you can see the North Star. It hardly ever moves. That’s the one I keep my eyes on. And during daylight, I have my Sun Dial.”

A farmhouse in Iceland. From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
As they get nearer, they see houses built from stone and peat. Like those in Shetland. But here it looks as if some of the houses are built jointly.

Vagn. From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
“DON’T CARE? You don’t care?” Vagn roars. “You don’t care about who was to blame for Sven’s murder? It might even have suited you! Well, did it? So you could be the chieftain? Maybe you yourself had a hand in it? Is that what you know?” “You beast!” Hauge screams, completely beside himself. He unsheathes his knife and thrusts at Vagn.

 |
The Storm. From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
As the ship is surfing downwards, yet another enormous wave breaks over them. It knocks the ship sideways to the waves and it rolls uncontrollably from side to side. The men are thrown around by the violent movements, even though they’re tied down, and crash into each other and the ship; screaming from terror. Hauge can do nothing. Quietly, he begs the Gods to help him.

Haithabu (Hedeby). From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
What a town! The countless small catted huts nearest the rampart lie close by each other. Barely divided by a small patch of muddy land and low wattles, behind which pigs and geese pick the ground. The wood-paved road in between them is flooded with people; craftsmen, traders, women, and children. Most are either on their way to or from the harbour.

Trading. From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
There have already been a large number of people asking for his wares. And he did sell some, too. But now and then he stares with envy at Hauge’s cargo, and at all the people who come to look at the precious walrus tusks. They talk to Hauge and his men about their voyage, and discreetly ask for the price of the rare ivory. Still, no one has made a bid yet, but the rumours of the precious cargo quickly spread throughout the city.

The Duel. From Viking Blood 4, New Life by Marianne Slot
Hauge makes a lunge towards Vagn. Tries to trick him to shield himself in the wrong place, but at the last moment, Vagn brings his shield into the right position, and the blow is deflected. Both are experienced, quick-witted, and strong fighters. So they fight this way for a long time, but neither seems to get the better of the other.

Term. From Viking Blood 5, Raiding by Marianne Slot
Suddenly, Edwina crouches, clutching Hauge. “I think – we need to hurry back!” Then she turns completely white-faced and sways strangely. As if she’s fainting. Luckily, Astrid comes running from Lauge’s house. She must have seen them. She takes hold of Edwina’s arm, and Hauge supports her on the other side. Together they manage to bring her home to the house and call for the birth-aides.

Enemy Child. From Viking Blood 5, Raiding by Marianne Slot
Suddenly someone grabs his leg. “Where are you going, Hauge? Can I come?” It’s Olav clutching his leg. Hauge turns around and kicks him furiously. “You low-life!” He snarls and keeps kicking the crying boy. “I’ll kill you!”

A New Ship. From Viking Blood 5, Raiding by Marianne Slot
“You’ll have to hammer them into the trunk, real hard, so it splits at the right spot,” he says to Hauge. “That way, we can make a lot of even boards out of one trunk.” As the wood gives way to the sharp wedges and opens as it should, the men force strong poles into the opening. Now they can cleave it the rest of the way with their adzes.

Attacking in England. From Viking Blood 5, Raiding by Marianne Slot
At that moment, a furious man jumps out on him. He’s big and strong, but obviously just got out of his bed. His hair stands on end and he’s in his nightshirt. Armed with a long knife, he lashes out at Hauge with furious, uncertain slashes. But Hauge is too fast for him. He dodges one blow after the other, parrying and blocking with his sword and shield. And then the knife breaks. The man is left with only half a knife and for a brief moment, he stares at it surprised and confused. Then stares at Hauge - and runs.

Searching for gold. From Viking Blood 5, Raiding by Marianne Slot
They start pushing again. And then, with one great push, they move it a little more. This time they have moved it enough to actually let them see what is down there. But – there’s nothing! And it’s not a grave at all! Only some steps that lead down and disappear in the darkness! What’s down there? Is someone waiting for them? Is it an ambush?
